John Luciano, host of the weekly automotive podcast, Motormouth, spoke with executive sponsor, Barry Henson of Ken’s Kar Kolors about the continued success of the Make-A-Wish Car Show in Amarillo, Texas.

“This is our 32nd year of helping the Make-A-Wish Foundation here in Amarillo” says Henson.  “We’re expecting over 300 cars in this year’s show and collect over $70,000 for this great organization.”

“The Make-A-Wish Car Show has been a West Texas Panhandle tradition” says Luciano.  “It started over thirty years ago with an old school car group; the Panhandle Council of Car Clubs, getting together every Saturday morning to talk about their love of cars.”

“This show is so much more than cars” says Alba Austin, Development Office for Make-A-Wish North Texas. “This show has helped hundreds of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their lives” she says.

The Make-A-Wish Car Show will be held at the Amarillo Civic Center March 5 – 6, 2016, Saturday: 10:00 am – 7:00 pm.  Sunday: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Admission is only $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 – 18.

You can see a preview of some of the custom cars that will be featured at this year’s Make-A-Wish Car Show on the Motormouth Video Podcast.

The Make-A-Wish story begins with a brave, seven-year old named Chris.  Diagnosed with leukemia, Chris yearned to be a police officer.  “I want to catch bad guys” Chris said.

“We met Chris with a patrol car and motorcycle and flew him to our headquarters on a helicopter” said retired U.S. Customs Agent and Co-founder of Make-A-Wish, Tommy Austin.  “We had an official uniform made for his size and presented him with official motorcycle officer’s wings” said Austin.

Today, the legacy of Chris Greicius continues; every 38 minutes Make-A-Wish grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the U.S.  Street Toyota knows that a wish experience can be a game-changer for a child.  This is the belief that guides everything that Make-A-Wish does.

It’s this inspiration that excites us about our partnership with Make-A-Wish North Texas to send one of our hometown heroes to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.  Street Toyota will match, dollar-for-dollar, every donation made with our cashier toward this Make-A-Wish dream.  So take an extra moment in our parts or service department to make a donation to keep officer Greicius’ legacy alive.

Street Toyota of Amarillo creates under-the-hood ‘Video Selfies’ for their customers

AMARILLO, TX – Street Toyota in Amarillo Street Toyota is using state-of-the art video technology to provide their customers a mini-mechanical lesson on their own vehicle. “It’s a customer experience like no other” says Jason Reed, Service Manager for Street Toyota. “The moment you pull in to our service drive, our advisers asses your needs on iPads to speed up the process for you.” Reed says.

Street Toyota technicians take videos of cars in the shop and show their customers what repairs, if any, are needed. “The process is quick and easy” says Mike Good, General Manager. “Technicians inspect vehicles with their iPods, press the record button and show the customer what they found. There’s no editing or compressing files” says Good. “Customers receive the video in an email and text message.”

Customer’s video messages are color coded; Green means the car is in great shape and no work is required. Yellow warns of a repair that will be needed down the road, like worn brakes or cracks in a control arm bushing, and a red-coded video shows a repair that needs immediate attention.

Shops can monitor when a customer watches a video, how much of it is viewed, how many times it’s been watched and if they sent it to anyone else. Customers are invited to call the shop, or they can ask the store to contact them to approve any additional work that might be recommended.

“Customers are watching their personalized videos, calling back and ordering the work with confidence” says Reed. “People are just blown away by the transparency and our very honest presentation of what’s recommended.”

If a technician determines that a customer’s vehicle needs multiple repairs, but the customer only elects to do some of the work immediately, the service advisor can immediately schedule a follow-up message. The original video message can be resent a week, month or even a year later to remind the customer of the needed repairs.

“The response from our customers has been great” says Good. “We embrace any technology that improves our customer’s experience.”

Street Toyota uses “Click & Send” video technology from Quik Video, LLC. “Street Toyota has increased their service efficiency” says Jack Gardner of Quik Video. “They made sure we trained all of their service staff to save time and money for their customers.” Check out Quick Video’s website at http://qkvideo.com/ for more information.

The Lighter Side of Volkswagen’s Troubles

Motormouths: John Luciano and Flo
Motormouths: John Luciano and Flo

As a member of the Dealer Council for Volkswagen Group of America, I got to see, firsthand, the exciting and innovate designs to be unveiled this year.

Even the high-tech building that houses Volkswagen’s U.S. headquarters in Herndon, Virginia is an amazing feat of architectural wonder. Thoughtful design is incorporated into each of its 185,000 square feet. A central, interconnecting staircase between the second and sixth floors is a sight to behold.

Naturally, the Council also discussed the continued challenges that face Volkswagen; both for our customers and dealers.

One of the most interesting things I discovered at this meeting was something that wasn’t on the agenda; Humor and playful communication.

While tackling some of the most important (and serious) issues within your organization, remember to strengthen your relationships with everyone involved by triggering some positive feelings. We simply think better the less stress we have.

When we laugh with one another, that positive bond is created. This bond acts as a strong cushion against stress.

“A day without laughter is a day wasted.” – Charlie Chaplin

A study published in the Harvard Business Review discusses how followers mirror their leaders. According to this study in behavioral neuroscience, human brains contain mirror neurons. A subset of these mirror neurons is to detect other people’s smiles and laughter, prompting smiles and laughter in return.

A leader or coworker who is self-controlled and humorless will rarely engage those neurons in his team, but a boss who laughs and sets an easygoing tone puts those neurons to work, triggering spontaneous laughter and binding his team together in the process.

Check out some of the fun in action: https://www.facebook.com/StreetVolkswagen/videos/1182656061746084/

What will you do to make your coworkers or staff smile today? Sometimes business can be seriously fun! – Lucky

Super Bowl 50 Sports Podcaster; “Is that a football or a baseball?”

Flo at SB50
Flo at SB50

The Denver Broncos are on top of the NFL once again and our roving reporter, Flo was right there to capture it all!  Well, sort of… Check out the highlights and lowlights of this historic 50/50; Flo turns 50 and the Super Bowl too.  If only he knew the difference between a football and baseball!

I had a great time with my daughter in Santa Clara, California this weekend.  We’re not the biggest sports fans, however, the Super Bowl brings out the best in all of  us!  We had fun making a quick, parody-type video podcast from the most technologically advanced stadium in the league; Levi’s Stadium. Simply amazing!

While in Santa Clara, we enjoyed a visit to The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.  This Museum is the ‘Hall of Fame’ for nerds like us!   Some of our favorite exhibits included rare or one-of-a-kind objects such as a Cray-1 supercomputer as well as a Cray-2, Cray-3.  My daughter found it amusing that Cray (always the fashion plate) allowed customers to personalize their Cray from a variety of upholstery color choices on the iconic C-shaped seating around the base of each supercomputer.  $30 million gave you choices back then!  We discovered that underneath Cray’s unique seating design was the supercomputer’s cooling units.  The CHM does an excellent job in preserving and presenting the stories and artifacts of the information age.  It was great father and daughter time too.  I was able to say “Hey, I used to use one of those” as I pointed out relics like cassette tapes and floppy discs!

Check out the fun on our video podcast:  https://www.facebook.com/streettoyota/videos/10153320623770848/ Leave us a comment and tell me some of the interesting things you’ve done with your son or daughter too!

Street Toyota announces record sales

Mike Good, General Manager and Joe Street, Owner of Street Toyota
Mike Good, General Manager and Joe Street, Owner of Street Toyota

AMARILLO, TX – Street Toyota in Amarillo achieved the 40th highest volume in used car sales out of 13,050 in the state of Texas for 2015.  “This is a great accomplishment” says Mike Good, General Manager of Street Toyota.  “Ranking 40th in Texas is huge when you consider that we’re the most populous State, after California.”

Street Toyota’s rankings were announced recently by Cross-Sell Reports, a division of Dominion Dealer Solutions, which collects the information via state departments of motor vehicles.  Street Toyota’s rankings were compared to more than 1,300 franchised automobile dealerships in nearly 300 communities throughout the state of Texas, according to The Texas Automobile Dealers Association (TADA).   There are over 13,050 used car dealers in Texas when all independent lots are included.

“We’re honored to help so many families with their transportation needs in the West-Texas Panhandle area” says Cory Dupriest, General Sales Manager of Street Toyota.

With nearly 27 million inhabitants, Texas would actually rank number 47 in size worldwide if Texas was compared as an independent country (Saudi Arabia (30.8 million) and Australia (23.6 million)).  Street Toyota’s sales volume competes with dealerships in cities with large Motorplex areas like the Dallas/Fort Worth region at 6.4 million people.

“Last year we helped 2,858 people find the exact pre-owned or Toyota Certified Pre-Owned car that they needed” says Good.  “It’s not the total number of sales that impresses us, it’s the fact that we’re blessed with so many opportunities to serve our neighbors and friends in this part of the country” says Good. “It’s what makes coming to work every day so fulfilling.”

Street Toyota is a high-volume store in Amarillo, with a population 196,000.  “By paying attention to the needs of our customers we’ve been able to assist families not just from Texas, but also from Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas” says Dupriest.

C-4 Analytics; A look inside digital marketing

8 Ball die refuses to die
8 Ball die refuses to die

C-4 Analytics conducted a memorable presentation at Digital Dealer 20 in Orlando recently. Justin Cook, co-founder of C-4 challenged dealers to not get lost in convoluted and confusing reporting. “Too often vendor reporting is designed to distract dealers from what’s important” says Cook. “I encourage dealers to hold their vendors more accountable.”

I applaud C-4’s commitment to providing innovative strategies and technology to help dealers reduce costs and improve their profitability with digital marketing.

My daughter has another idea about C-4; she disassembled their clever, Magic 8 Ball-style convention give away. “I wanted the dice inside” she says! Oh well, I guess we all want to deconstruct digital marketing into easy-to-understand bits and pieces! When I saw the dripping, blue die, it reminded me of an advanced Borg ship. – Flo

TrueCar; This one’s for the ‘Chipper’

Jeanine Clement
Jeanine Clement, Finance Director of Street Volkswagen

It was pleasure to speak with Chip Perry at Digital Dealer 20 in Orlando recently.  Perry, the new CEO of TrueCar, helped build AutoTrader into a billion dollar shopping site.

Being an automotive fanatic, I was intrigued by Perry’s automotive collection.  I had questions about the restoration of his 1948 Volkswagen Beetle… Perry, however, was truly interested to hear from dealers on how he can make TrueCar better.  It was refreshing to hear how deeply committed he is in rebuilding the trust of auto dealers. “It’s going to start with connecting with dealers again, one-on-one” Perry says. With Perry’s reputation for success and the fact that he has a Beetle in his garage; you’ve got to give the guy a chance!

We know, buying a car can be stressful. That’s one of the reasons the Street Auto Group has partnered with TrueCar. When you come to Street Volkswagen and Street Toyota you’ll discover a transparent, anxiety-free and fun experience!

Find out what makes the Street Auto Group different in our Motormouth Video Podcast. This episode features Kerri Wise, Vice President of Dealer Engagement and Communications at TrueCar, an automotive website for car buyers.

The first rule of Nick’s Fight Club is “You don’t talk about Nick’s Fight Club!”

Put that Halloween candy down!  “Our Street Auto Group employees have teamed up with a local gym here in Amarillo” says semi-pro UFC Fighter, Karina Acevedo.  “Cooperating with a gym in your area is a great way to get your employees engaged and in shape!  Of course you might use my approach, which is to say, ‘If you don’t join, I’ll kick your butt!'”

Here in Amarillo, Nick’s Fight Club combines a great aerobic workout that will build your stamina and have you looking lean and mean for the New Year.  For more information, call the Club at (806) 322-1574.

Tactical Pens; Write your next page of protection!

Tactical Pens are used by plenty of survivalists, for good reason. Extending their usefulness beyond writing, many tactical pens double as glass breakers and self defense tools for emergencies. Design details on tactical pens include aggressively knurled sections and ridges for grip, at least one pointed end, and refills that can write under the harshest conditions; like when my boss gives me a deadline… Yesterday! – Flo

“Reward if Found” say all the posters throughout Amarillo as the ‘manhunt’ for Hello Kitty intensifies.

Hello Kitty has been the unofficial mascot of the Street Volkswagen’s Business Development Center.  “I brough in ‘HK’ as a morale booster” says BDC representative, Sarah Bond.  “Now, everyone’s morale is down because we can’t find our poor, little Kitty.”

“At this moment, Nick Fischer remains a person of interest” says investigator, Enrique Ledesma III. “We’ve been trying to interrogate him, however, it’s hard to take someone seriously with that silly, maniacal smirk!”

You’ve probably wondered how many people have clicked on the “Upgrade to Pandora One” button to rid themselves of those annoying commercials that interrupt their free, I’m-too-cheap-to pay music… Or maybe it’s just me… Being too cheap, I mean.

Well, John Karpinski, the Regional Vice President of Tier 3 Automotive for Pandora, the online music service finally let the secrets out of the box.

Check out our informative Motormouth Video Blog with John Luciano,Brad Paschal, Cristina Neal and myself from the convention room floor of Digital Dealer 20 in Orlando, Florida.

Karpinski also answers other interesting questions such as:

  • “How does Pandora customize my station?”
  • “How can I make my station better?”
  • “What’s the difference between selecting ‘thumb up’ or ‘thumb down?’
  • “What else can I do with my ‘Clapper?'”

Tune in to discover the nitty-gritty for yourself!  Please leave me a comment and let me know if you found our blog informative! – Flo
